South Pacific Pictures, producers of the Oscar-nominated feature film Whale Rider, has been given the green light to develop a new miniseries, Pandemic. The 2 x 2 hour drama takes place in the midst of a global epidemic. Because New Zealand is the most isolated country on earth, it may be the last safe haven. But when the virus hits, many foreign nationals find themselves stranded, unable to get home; while even more are trying to seek refuge. "This timely project is inspired by today's headlines," says South Pacific Pictures Managing Director Jane Millichip. "But it is not simply about Avian flu. International health authorities have confirmed we are vulnerable to resilient viruses. It's not a question of if, but when. And if it's not bird flu there will be another mutation. "This drama is about what happens when New Zealand becomes the last refuge on Earth." Pandemichas already received development commitments from TV3 and New Zealand on Air. South Pacific Pictures is also in discussion with international co-production partners and potential buyers. The mini-series will feature an A-list international cast and is due to go into production in 2006. |
