South Pacific Pictures television productions have taken a record 28 nominations in the 2003 AFTA New Zealand Television Awards. Shortland Street, Mercy Peak and Mataku dominate the dramas categories in the nominations announced on Wednesday 16 July. Shortland Street (which plays on TV2) has three nominations, Mercy Peak (TV ONE) has 11, and the ground-breaking Maori drama series Mataku (TV3) has garnered 14. The announcement comes just days after South Pacific Pictures celebrated its 15th anniversary, and while its award-winning feature film Whale Rider is reaping national and international critical and popular acclaim. South Pacific Pictures Managing Director John Barnett says: "It's great to see the creative talents on three of our productions get the recognition they deserve. We are very proud of everyone involved in the production of these programmes."
